In today’s marketplace the packaging industry is massive. Every detail and component costs money. Understanding the costs of packaging begins with understanding the most important features of packaging. These features are key as your items move throughout the package environment. The package environment includes all the hazards packaged products may see, including physical and environmental

Let’s take a look at four of the most important features of packaging and examples of each.

1. Containment
   The most basic packaging function is containment. It is the ability to hold the product during the package environment.
   Example: Containing liquid from leaking during shipment
   
   
2. Protection
   Protection maintains the integrity of the product throughout the package environment. The packaging should protect the product so it can be delivered intact and unbroken.
   Example: Properly protecting products from vibration, shock, moisture during the distribution environment
   
   
3. Communication
   It is important for your packaging to communicate. The packaging must convey information through verbiage, signs, symbols, etc. The packaging must properly identify its contents. This is often regulated for safety.
   Example:  Identification of the product size, ingredients, color, manufacturer, or location
   
   
4. Utility/Convenience
   This is the package function that deals with performance, function or "ease of use". Packaging should help the consumer use or transport the product and reduce effort or time to utilize.
   Example: Resealable or Reusable packaging like clip crates

It is important to understand these basic packaging functions. The most demanding hazards are generally found during the distribution cycle. Issues do occur with packaging and shipping. Understanding all the packaging functions will allow for better solutions and happier customers.
