Springtime is the perfect time for projects! More specifically pallet projects! We recently came across two spring projects that used wood pallets in unique ways. At The Nelson Company we are always impressed with creative non-shipping uses for wood and plastic pallets. This first project was created for a roof top deck in the Federal Hill neighborhood of downtown Baltimore, Maryland. This rooftop bench was created using 16 wooden pallets that were cut down to fit the space. They were sanded and white washed. Next the pallets were stacked on top of each other and raised up on pavers. Some of the pallets were even cut into half sizes to create the back of the L-shaped bench. The seat cushion was handmade and accented by colorful throw pillows. This bench is the perfect spot for people (and dogs) to enjoy a cook out or relax in the summer sun.

All lumber can be graded based on its quality characteristics. When grading lumber, graders are looking for defects, such as knots. Lumber graders check the size and the frequency of defects within a certain linear length. Since there is a correlation between lumber grade and defects, higher grade lumber can have better performance characteristics than lower grade material, but sometimes the higher grade is more of an aesthetic.
While both stringer and block pallets can be made to work with most supply chains, determining which pallet to buy usually comes down to the following three questions:
Are your pallets safe for your rack application? Load ratings on manufacturers brochures MAY be accurate but are often times they are misleading because they are tested with ideal unit loads. Obviously, the load you are using could be drastically different than what they tested.
