Most people probably don’t consider pallets as complicated structures. But believe it or not, there is actually a Research Lab at Virginia Tech that has been dedicated to the testing and research of pallets for over 40 years! Launched in 1976, the Lab was funded by a true partnership of pallet companies and the National Wooden Pallet and Container Association (NWPCA). Its mission over the years was to conduct research, most of it very applied to the industry and pallet users

Ever wonder why your pallets are made of a certain wood type?
Most industrial wood pallets and crates are produced with lumber from locally grown forests. In the southeast US where pine trees grow, most wood pallets and crates are made from pine lumber. The northeastern states produce a lot of hardwood trees and on the west coast other softwood species are the most commercially available. The lumber map below shows the geographic breakdown of lumber varieties normally used in industrial packaging. The color coding correlates to species that grow in that region. When is it necessary to use a food grade plastic pallet?
The question of whether or not you need to use a food grade plastic pallet can be a complicated one. A food grade plastic pallet is made from materials that can come into direct contact with food. If your process involves the direct contact of the pallet with food, and you are manufacturing in The United States, you will most likely be required to use a FDA approved food grade plastic pallet. Remember when we told you that you could build custom crates fast? We showed you our reusable clip crates. Well now we can show you how with this instructional video of a clip crate assembly. |
