How to Prevent Wooden Pallets from Rotting

8/8/2019

Wood is our most common material for building pallets because it is strong and durable. To make sure your pallets avoid rot and stay this way, proper storage is essential. First, consider how long you will be storing pallets made from wood.

For short-term storage of a few months or less (most pallets out there), the effects of outdoor storage such as moisture, sun, snow, etc. will usually not have an adverse effect on wooden pallet performance. But, long-term storage under poor conditions can lead to pallets that "look" bad, grow mold and can even become rotten and unsuitable for use.

Are you creating a perfect environment for mold growth? If you are using stretch wrap this summer, the answer might be yes!

Mold is one of the major issues that all pallet users face. This is especially true during the hot humid summer months. Stretch wrap can make a mold problem worse and even cause the mold to transfer onto your product. There are some things to consider if you are running into issues with mold.

Don’t scrap that moldy pallet just yet... we might be able to save it!

The bad news is you found mold on your pallets. The good news is that mold grows on the surfaces of the pallet components. This surface growth does not structurally degrade the material - at least not in the short term.
Wood Pallet MoldIf the mold growth is in the early stages and has not yet degraded the wood, you might be able to save your pallet.

Got mold on your wood pallets? First thing is do not panic!

It's okay to be concerned. No one in the supply-chain ever wants to receive a wood pallet covered in mold. If this is the first time you've encountered mold, consider yourself lucky. Now that you've found mold, however, it's time to get educated and be proactive.
